To
My Dear Students,
A
Chasidic Rebbe told of the Russian Czar who, while
inspecting his troops, failed to notice an enemy
soldier whose rifle was aimed at him. Fortunately
for the Czar, one of his loyal troops pulled the
imperial horse's reins and averted the assassination.
The grateful Czar said to his savior, "Tell
me your greatest wish and consider it granted."
"Majesty," said the soldier, "I
am a private in the army and my corporal is a
cruel man. Would you please send him to
another regiment?" "Fool,"
answered the Czar, "why don't you ask to
be made a sergeant?"
We often do not set our sights high enough.
We are too often content with adding days to our
years and not discontented with failing to make
our lives larger in content. May we enlarge
our lives through spiritual pursuits and deeds
of loving kindess. Our Bible says to "lift
our eyes to the mountains." Higher,
larger, greater, better, stronger, wiser -- these
are the goals of a blessed life!"
With
Shalom,
Your
Rabbi
