To My Dear Students,
When we refer to “Oldies” music, some think of the 1940’s, or 1950’s, or 1960’s. But no “Oldie” compares to the song in this week’s Torah Portion. It was sung by the Children of Israel after crossing the Sea, escaping Pharoah, and reaching safety. It contains the familiar words that we chant: “Mi Kamocha,” Who Is Like You, O L-rd?”
We still sing this song 3,321 years after it was composed. It has been at the top of the Jewish charts for 33 centuries!
Here is something that has stood the test of time. We, who live in a disposable society that embraces change for the sake of change, should learn from the longevity of this song: that just because something is new does not mean it is better, and just because something is modern does not mean it is an improvement.
What has staying power in your life? What core values of yours remain constant? What is it about yourself that you want to last?
Shabbat Shalom,
Your Rabbi |
