Eat Your Bread and be Satisfied

To My Dear Students,

Our Torah Portion tells us:  "If you will follow My commandments, you will eat your bread and be satisfied."

We all want to find satisfaction, contentment, and happiness in our lives.  I once read of seven impediments to happiness:

1.    inflated expectations
2.   confusing pleasure with happiness
3.   believing happiness lies in external things
4.   preoccupation with self
5.   discontent over what you lack
6.   lack of gratitude for what you already have
7.   searching far and wide for happiness when it is already at hand

We can conclude that every event is an opportunity to find satisfaction and happiness through spiritual growth.

The next time you are dissatisfied, unhappy, or discontented, look at the above list and ask yourself whether you are experiencing these states because you are afflicted with one or more of the above.

Shabbat Shalom,

Your Rabbi
